SECTION A
Global Use of English
Good morming, everybody. In today's section, we'll first look at how English is used worldwide and
then discuss some of the different reactions. Now let's think about this question: what are people using
English for? In order to answer this question, we'll look at a maijor worldwide trend that has had infuence
on spread of English. The trend I'm talking about is globallzation. Then, what is glohalization? In short,
[1]it is a process of operating businesses in a lot of countries all over the world. In doing business
worldwide, there is a growing need for people to be able to communieate with members of organizations,
for example, colleagues, customers and partners throughout the world.[2]And English is the language that
is used most widely in international business communication. So people need to know English so as to
communicate with people from different countries or places around the world. That perhaps explains why
English has become a popular means of international business communication.
OK, now let's move on to another toptc and look at how English is viewed around the world. [3]The
first opinion is that the spread of English is good for the world. People who believe this argue that English
is actually superior to other languages. They say that, for instance,[4]it has the most expressive vocabulary
¡¤of any of the other languages in the world and is therefore a better language for communicating ideas.
Well, another point of view is that the spread of English is a benefit because it's neutral. Why is it so?
When we look at a country like India, for example, we can understand this opinion. There are at least 33
different regional languages in India. So which one should they use, say, in courtrooms or legal documents?
[5]In India, they have decided to use English so that nobody can feel insulted. People who hold this
opinion, that is English is good because it's neutral, also say that [6]English is a benefit as long as it can
exist together with other languages.
Now, let's look at two negative opinions about English. [7]The first point is the spread or use of
English into non-English-speaking countries can be harmful and is actually dangerous. The people who
hold this opinion think that the use of English could negatively affect the local language. How could it do
this? For example, [8]it could make the local langunge less pure. In fact, they say lt's important to actirely
protect the local language from the induence of English. The other negative view states that [0]English s
not a neutral force, but instead, its spread is part of a plan with very particular politcal and economic
goals. According to this view,[10]pcople who speak English would have a beiter chance of infuencing of
even controlling others, the countries, and the cconomies of the world. They fear that individunl countries
will actually lose their special and unique qualities.
